DAY 3 PACAYMAYO –PHUYUPATAMARCA
After we pass the remains of Runcuracay lookout, here we look across
the high nevados of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. While traversing
the Runcuracay Pass we soon notice a change in the vegetation as
we have crossed the continental divide into the Amazon Basin. The
Inca Trail now becomes more apparent, descending past Yanacocha
(The Black Lagoon), a dry lake; we reach the ancient complex of
Sayajmarca. Suddenly we enter the rain forest. The trail, now unmistakable,
passes at one point through an Inca tunnel before opening out at
the route’s highest Inca construction of Phuyupatamarca. Camp
nearby. (B,L,D).
DAY
4 PHUYUPATAMARCA - MACCHU PICCHU
Now we are in open country again. We get glimpses of Mounts Pumasillo
and Salcantay in the distance, and thousands of feet below, we see
once again the Urubamba River. Then the long descent down the notorious,
never ending Inca steps. We then visit the well-preserved remains
of Wiñay Wayna. At Inti Punku, the Inca gate of the sun,
we get our first sight of Macchu Picchu. We finally cross the ridge
that leads to our destination, and the full grandeur of the greatest
archaeological discovery of modern times is revealed. We spend the
night at our last camp on the campground of the luxury Machu Picchu
Pueblo Hotel. (B,L,D)
DAY 5 MACCHU PICCHU - CUSCO
