Our first
easy day walking takes us to the Inca site of Llactapata, strategically
located at the confluence of the Kusichaca and Urubamba (at this
point often called the Vilcanota). Here we camp. (L,D)
DAY 02 LLACTAPATA – KM-104
We leave Llactapata and walk along the Vilcanota valley, our path
never far from the riverbank, and as we descend with the river the
vegetation becomes more tropical and we may see humming birds and
torrent ducks. Our second night under canvas is spent in a forest
clearing near the ruins of Cachabamba. Camp. (B,L,D)
DAY
03 KM-104 - MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO
After an early start to avoid the heat, we begin a steady climb
towards to ruins of Winay Wayña. The newly reconstructed
trail takes us across steep open hillside, and then into wooded
gullies, the jungle being thicker in the moist air near the streams.
A spectacular waterfall marks our arrival to Winay Wayña
(meaning ‘forever young’ in Quechua, the Inca language).
After visiting the site, we continue on a higher level trail through
cloud forest high above the river to Inti Punku, the Inca Gate of
the Sun. From here, we get our sudden first full sight of Machu
Picchu itself. Descending to the city, we have an introduction to
the site before descending to the river much of the terrain still
covered in jungle. Late afternoon we take the train which follows
the course of the Urubamba until Ollantaytambo and connect with
private bus back to Cusco. (B;BL)
